چکیده

Mingoo Seok, Scott Hanson, Yu-Shiang Lin, Zhiyoong Foo, Daeyeon Kim, Yoonmyung Lee, Dennis Sylvester, David Blaauw University of Michigan Ann Arbor [email protected] ABSTRACT An integrated platform for sensor applications, called the Phoenix Processor, is implemented in a 0.18μm CMOS process with an area of 915x915μm, making on-die battery integration feasible. The Phoenix Processor uses a comprehensive standby strategy with a unique power gating approach, custom low leakage memory cells, low voltage ROM, CPU with compact ISA, data memory compression, and adaptive data memory leakage management. Measurements show that the Phoenix Processor consumes on average 29.6pW in standby mode and 2.8pJ/cycle in active mode.

Wireless sensor nodes , each a self - powered system performing sensing , communication , and computation , form reliable mesh networks coordinating efforts to add intelligence to the environment

| Wireless sensor nodes are autonomous devices incorporating sensing, power, computation, and communication into one system. Applications for large scale networks of these nodes are presented in the context of their impact on the hardware design. The demand for low unit cost and multiyear lifetimes, combined with progress in CMOS and MEMS processing, are driving development of SoC solutions for...

Ultra-Low-Energy DSP Processor Design for Many-Core Parallel Applications

Background and Objectives: Digital signal processors are widely used in energy constrained applications in which battery lifetime is a critical concern. Accordingly, designing ultra-low-energy processors is a major concern. In this work and in the first step, we propose a sub-threshold DSP processor. Methods: As our baseline architecture, we use a modified version of an existing ultra-low-power...

PD Myers: Design of Robust, Low-Power CMOS Circuits for Millimeter-Scale Sensor Nodes

Design techniques for robust, low-power CMOS circuits are presented for applications in wireless cubicmillimeter sensor nodes. First, the design of a two-transistor voltage reference is described and its characteristics simulated. Then, a low-voltage toggle flip-flop circuit is discussed and modeled using standard switching theory. Finally, a study of the battery used to power the cubic-millime...

Ultra-low Power Communication Logic Circuits for Distributed Sensor Networks

SmartDust, a concept recently proposed by Kris Pister [1], are millimeter scale sensing and communication platforms composing a distributed sensor network that can monitor environmental conditions in both military and commercial applications (figure 1). These networks consist of hundreds to thousands of dust motes and a few interrogating transceivers. Each mote consists of multiple sensors, a p...

An Ultra-Low-Power Application-Specific Processor with Sub-VT Memories for Compressed Sensing

Compressed sensing (CS) is a universal low-complexity data compression technique for signals that have a sparse representation in some domain. While CS data compression can be done both in the analogand digital domain, digital implementations are often used on low-power sensor nodes, where an ultra-low-power (ULP) processor carries out the algorithm on Nyquist-rate sampled data. In such systems...
